Even if the snow sports hall in the mountain was ultimately not realised by the Campus Ostschweiz project, it was an important laboratory for the future of sport in Switzerland - and we at VersuchsStollen Hagerbach were proud to have been a central part of this innovative vision.
The idea was as ambitious as it was necessary: In view of the challenges posed by climate change, unevenly distributed educational and training opportunities and a lack of proximity between sport, business and society, the aim was to create a holistic campus - locally anchored in Sarganserland, internationally relevant.
At the heart of the concept was the Hagerbach snow sports facility, a training and research environment in the heart of the mountain that can be used all year round. The plan was to utilise the existing infrastructure of the Hagerbach test gallery and expand it in a targeted manner, including a 2.5 km cross-country ski run, an FIS-homologated slalom slope, and a bobsleigh push track. The entire project was complemented by innovative mobility solutions, such as the autonomous Rob Taxi, which was designed to make the tunnel landscape more accessible.
Special attention was paid to research and development, creating reproducible climate conditions, modular laboratories, and fostering close cooperation between athletes, coaches, scientists, and industry to strengthen Switzerland as a sports location in the long term. Our expertise in the areas of underground infrastructure, sustainable energy and system integration was actively incorporated into the planning phase.
The project remains an inspiring example of how interdisciplinary collaboration can open up new avenues. The Hagerbach Test Gallery will continue to be a hub for visionary projects in the future, situated at the intersection of research, practice, and innovation.
