Research, Development and Innovation
In Switzerland, there is no versatile infrastructure available for underground research. The Underground Future Lab offers the ideal platform for ideation, prototyping and implementation of experiments and new technologies that exploit the unique possibilities of underground space usage in the context of the UN sustainable development goals and open access philosophy.
From Research to Application
At The Underground Future Lab, research, development and innovation are closely linked. Projects are designed to move beyond theoretical concepts and laboratory simulations into real underground environments, where technologies, materials and systems can be tested under realistic operational conditions.
We work in an interdisciplinary and application-oriented manner, bringing together industry, research institutions and public authorities. This approach enables the development of solutions that are technically robust, scalable and relevant for real-world deployment.

Key Research Areas
We address major global megatrends such as urbanisation and climate change by asking central questions: what potential does underground space offer, and how can it be used to develop, test and demonstrate solutions for the future?
Our work looks beyond conventional tunnels and metro systems. It explores how underground space can be actively used, and how solutions developed underground can also create value above ground.
Prototyping & Innovation
The continuously growing environment of The Underground Future Lab offers optimal conditions for testing prototypes (devices, machines) as well as structural implementations (buildings, components, installations and system solutions) and their functionality.
Projects Call
We actively invite research institutions, companies and public stakeholders to initiate and participate in research and innovation projects.
Projects can be initiated through:
- Infrastructure investments at the Underground Future Lab through ppen infrastructure calls by VSH
- Joint research initiatives and participation in structures programmes (Innosuisse, SNSF, EU Horizon, …)
- Industry-driven development projects
Organisation & Governance
Research, development and innovation activities at The Underground Future Lab are embedded in a clear organisational and governance structure. This ensures, reliable operation of the infrastructure, long-term planning and continuity as well as transparent collaboration with partners and compliance with safety, regulatory and quality standards.
